alpine asked:
I recall seeing this movie as a boy. There was this French man who visits one of the islands in French Polynesia (could have been Hawaii), where he falls in love with the daughter of the island’s chief. He is allowed to marry her, provided he conforms to local customs etc. But the volcano on the island is fuming and about to blast, the medicine man or the Chief’s adviser tells the chief that his daughter must sacrifice herself by throwing herself into the erupting volcano to apease the gods, only then the volcano will calm down and the people of the island will be spared.

Anyway, the ending is quite sad, because the girl does throw herself into the steaming volcano, and at the very end the French man leaves the island.
iT WAS an interesting story, one might consider it a kind of a rare classic movie. The problem is I don’t remember the name of the movie or any of the actors from this movie. Can someone tell me the name of the movie so that I could try and buy it somewhere.

I never saw the black and white version but I did see the color version of Bird of Paradise in the 1950s. It starred Debra Paget and Jeff Chandler.
